Arithmetic & Pre-Algebraic Skill Building

Strong arithmetic and pre-algebraic skills are critical for students’ success in all levels of mathematics. With the advent of the “new math” curricula and an increased dependence on calculators, some students do not develop a strong command of fundamental mathematical skills. Arithmetic & Pre-Algebraic Skill Building is designed for students entering the 7th and 8th grades. It focuses on solidifying both the mechanical and conceptual fundamentals of arithmetic, as well as explores topics often covered in pre-algebra courses. The exact scope and sequence of the course will be tailored to the group of students who enroll. Students will be required to complete a diagnostic assignment on the first day of the course.
Preparation for Geometry

Geometry is a unique mathematics course for high school students. While the content of geometry classes varies in different schools, most classes focus on the fundamentals of plane geometry (e.g., angles, triangles, and circles) as well as on deductive logic (e.g., geometric proofs). Many students are neither familiar with these fundamentals nor have much experience with the type of logic that is essential for the class. As such, students sometimes find geometry to be a very different kind of mathematics course. Preparation for Geometry will introduce students to the fundamentals of geometry which students are likely to encounter in the first couple months of their high school class. In addition the course will engage students in exercises which use deductive logic, so that students become familiar with it.

Algebra I-II Bridge

The sequence of high school mathematics typically begins with the study of algebra I, followed by geometry, and then algebra II. Algebra I is one of the first courses in students’ schooling in which they are presented with significant abstraction. Some students find this challenging. In addition, many of the skills taught in algebra I are not routinely utilized in geometry. Consequently, students who struggled in algebra I often have a difficult time with the transition to algebra II. Algebra I-II Bridge offers students an opportunity to rediscover fundamental algebraic concepts taught in algebra I which are essential for success in algebra II. In addition, this course makes connections with concepts that are likely to be encountered in algebra II. Topics include simplifying algebraic expressions, solving algebraic equations, factoring, exponents, radicals, and manipulating and graphing linear equations.

Chemistry, often referred to as the central science, is frequently one of the more challenging science courses a student encounters in his/her high school science education. The study of chemistry is much more abstract than either biology or physics, and it requires that students use logical reasoning skills infrequently used in other high school classes. Preparation for Chemistry will introduce students to both the major topics and types of thinking that they are likely to encounter in the first couple months of high school chemistry. The central goal of the course is to “pre-teach” key topics in high school chemistry so that students are more comfortable with the material when they encounter it in their school course.
